Fashion designer, mother and socialite Shoshanna Gruss launched her label 13 years ago when she couldn’t find enough options to flatter her curves. Since then she has built a solid business of dresses, sportswear, swimwear and children’s wear. Whether you are a lady who lunches, a party girl, or both, you can count on a Shoshanna dress for a polished, whimsical and feminine look. We caught up in her design room.
NM: Do you have a fashion icon?
SG: Sophia Loren. She always had a very elegant sense of style and wore such amazingly feminine dresses that highlighted her curvaceous body giving her a sense of sexiness while maintaining a level of tastefulness.
NM: What’s your personal style?
SG: I would say my style is romantic with a little bit of an edge. I tend to stick to very clean, simple lines and things that are beautifully fitted.
NM: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
SG: Being the mother to my daughter Sienna. My family is so important to me and I constantly strive to maintain a balance between work and home life. It is something that is constantly challenging, but so important to me!
NM: Any guilty pleasures?
SG: I love snuggling up on the couch with Sienna and sharing with a huge bowl of macaroni and cheese.
NM: What’s your fashion motto?
SG: Know your own body. What looks good on your best friend may not always work for you. Once you find a flattering silhouette that you like, I think you should stick to it and get more creative with your accessories to really personalize your look.
NM: What’s your favorite part of the creative process?
SG: I love that with designing, the sky is truly the limit. There is nothing that holds you back. When I am not seeing something out there in the market, I can just make it, which is a dream!
NM: What’s your favorite silhouette for Spring?
I loved all of the long flowing skirts and dresses on the runway this year. It was so relaxed and had this sense of timeless elegance that I am always trying to capture in my collection.
