Diane von Fursternberg and H.Stern have a few choice words for you. Since they partnered up on a fine jewelry line in 2004, they’ve produced instant classics, often identifiable by chunky chain links and rock crystal quartzes. Their latest eight-piece collection, called Sutras, was inspired by Jaipur, India and features verbiage.

“This new collection embodies the power of words and the power of gold,” says Diane von Furstenberg.

Sutra literally means thread in Sanskrit, and metaphorically refers to an aphorism, line, rule or formula.

DVF and H.Stern interpreted a traditional Kundan style, in which gold embraces a gemstone and assumes its shape. The rock crystals in each piece combine a flat upper surface with a rounded, or cabochon, lower surface, giving the impression of depth, and creating a mirror-like effect.

The designers also borrowed from a tradition of engraving. Inspirational words, rendered in Diane’s handwriting, are discreetly engraved on the reverse side of pendants: Love, Laughter, Freedom, Harmony, Confidence, Truth, Life.

“I wanted to create jewelry that is strong and powerful…but jewels are also used for protection and good luck. The pieces in my collection are bold and daring, but have an element of spirituality. The Sutras Bracelet is a bold piece that makes a statement and complements the clothes,” she says.

In addition to India she was influenced, as always, by the outdoors and women.

“I am greatly inspired by nature and carry my camera with me always, constantly taking pictures of things that I think might make great colors or patterns…Nature inspires me both in fashion and beauty. I also get inspired by watching women all around the world as I travel,” she says.
