Seeing Things: Art Basel Miami + Charlotte Olympia

Charlotte Olympia Art shoes.

Charlotte Olympia's hand-painted art shoes.

In search of visual inspiration? Or simply a tan? Head to sunny Miami Beach December 6-9 for Art Basel Miami, America’s premier contemporary and modern art fair. The event will be celebrating its 11th anniversary as the stateside sister to the original, founded in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970.

Over 260 international galleries—both new and established—will be in attendance to show the works of thousands of artists. New-to-the-scene names will show alongside the highly acclaimed, in special exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, and public art projects.

Among the galleries and museum installations, you’ll find curated showcases like Art Nova, a section designated for artists’ freshest work from the past three years; Art Public, a performance art event at Collins Park; and Art Salon and Art Basel Conversations, featuring panel discussions and dialogues among artists, collectors, curators and other leading figures on the international art scene.

And you wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to party and brush shoulders with anyone from Ai Weiwei to Kanye West. Not to mention the best people-watching this side of Paris Fashion Week.

During Art Basel, the NM Bal Harbour store is throwing its own international art party. On December 4 from 2 to 4 pm, London-based shoe designer Charlotte Olympia and a mystery artist will be hand-painting her Dolly platform pump in the shoe salon. The one-of-a-kind pieces will be sold at a private event that night, but a limited edition of about 40 pre-painted shoes will be available for pre-order.

Road Test: Isabel Marant Wedge Sneakers

Pumped up kicks are on the feet of “it” girls everywhere. The stiletto-meets-sneaker was the ultimate must-have accessory at fashion month in September, inducing an international fashion phenomenon that was instantaneously followed by an international wait list. Seen on the feet of fashion editors, bloggers and supermodels alike, the original wedge sneaker by Isabel Marant (master of casual-cool Parisian chic) is perhaps the most coveted within the fashion set.

I velcroed-up in one of the new Resort 2013 styles for a playful romp around the park adjacent to our flagship store. Paired with the leather leg and an oversized knit, I took to the jungle gym to test the athletic abilities of the 4 inch heels.

Isabel Marant wedge sneaker, Resort 2013.

Did they feel like 4 inch heels? Not at all. In fact they felt like my running shoes, but boosted my posture the way only a fabulous pair of pumps can. It’s no wonder this unlikely trend has stuck.

Isabel Marant shoes are expected to deliver in December at Neiman Marcus Dallas-NorthPark, Houston, San Francisco, Ala Moana and Coral Gables.

On Set: The Christmas Book at Bonneville Salt Flats

bonneville

The Christmas Book 2012

Our creative team returned to Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats for this year’s Christmas Book because the play of light makes it look like a vast snowscape. It is very remote, however, and this video shows how much effort it took to create the right conditions in a very unique and challenging location. It was absolutely gorgeous, unlike anything I’d ever seen before. From a styling perspective, the salt presented a bit of a challenge. The salt would get on everything and cake onto the bottoms of all the shoes, and if left on there long, would eat up the fabric and ruin them. We had to make sure all the merch went through a thorough cleaning before being packed back up! The salt even corroded our car battery from sitting out there all day, and we had to get a jump before heading back into town. But we had a really hard-working and fun crew, which I think resulted in a beautiful story for the 2012 Christmas Book.

Neiman Marcus + Target: The Products!

You’ve waited very patiently for this, and for that alone you belong on Santa’s “nice” list. NM and Target announced an epic co-collaboration with 24 CFDA designers way back in July. We now present the collection, which will be available December 1. As promised, it’s chockablock with giftable items for women, men, children, pets and home. What’s on your list?

Today in New York the retailers unveiled the products to the press, appeared on “Good Morning America” and announced a major integration into the ABC series “Revenge.” Target and Neiman Marcus will be the sole sponsors of the show’s November 11 finale, and in lieu of commercials, the Revenge team is creating original content incorporating the #Holiday24 collection. It will be stylish, scandalous, and it will destroy you.

In Detail: Hadleigh’s

Our shoe buyers pick color combinations for Resort at Hadleigh's atelier.

NM shoe buyers pick color combinations for Resort at Hadleigh's atelier.

As you know, this Fall we are all about a certain chic flat – the smoking slipper.  And the newcomer that has stolen the spotlight this season is Hadleigh’s Bespoke. You might have noticed the preppy slippers (you’ll never see a black pair from Hadleigh’s) in the NM shoe department. The Italian-made loafers were conceptualized by Ed and Gable Shaikh, the husband-and-wife team behind a burgeoning boutique atelier in Dallas.

We followed the NM shoe buyers to Hadleigh’s sunlight soaked space tucked in Dallas’ historic Highland Park Village. The purpose of the trip was to select custom color combinations for Resort 2013, so a rainbow of shoes were lined up on the table, most with Hadleigh’s embroidered English men emblem and others with tassels and bows.

“For Resort we picked up this new linen, it’s medium weight,” Gable said. “I actually prefer this medium linen. It’s durable.”

Gable’s knowledge of retail comes from years working, like her husband, at Ralph Lauren.

In 2009 the couple decided it was time to pursue something they had been dreaming about for a long time – opening a custom atelier for men and women. ”It was something we had in ourselves; we were excited about product,” Ed said. The business came into fruition after the birth of their first child, the brand’s namesake.

“From the stitch of the fabric’s thread, to the button hole, to the pattern matching, to the story board it is all very intricately detailed by myself and Gable.” Ed said.

Custom tailoring is the basis of the brand that began with men’s made-to-measure suits and women’s blouses.

“The niche that we created for our slipper revolved around the textiles being used,” Ed said. “Everyone else does a velvet smoking slipper, but we use amazing fabric that is backed with leather and is double shanked at the arch. The heel has a rubber backing so it has a great support and is really durable. It is not just a slipper for the house.”

“We don’t compromise anything,” Gable adds. “It’s our daughter’s name we have to uphold.”

Around The Office: Smoking Slippers

Kelly Forsythe in Valentino.

Kelly Forsythe in Valentino.

It’s hard on our feet to make it through the whole work day in high heels (let alone a whole fashion week!) Luckily this Fall we are giving them some relief in the form of smoking slippers. Our shoe buying team shows us the luxury loafers they are personally loving.

First we kicked back with ladies shoes assistant buyer Kelly Forsythe, (above) in Valentino Caviar-Crystal lace smoking slippers.

In Detail: Stella McCartney’s Biodegradable Soles

Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney's new biodegradable sole.

“In 2011, Stella McCartney Ltd. diverted 14.4 tonnes of waste from landfills to be recycled or reused.” A lifelong vegetarian, McCartney doesn’t use leather or fur in her designs. As her company evolves, so does her commitment to sustainability and animal rights.  This Fall, McCartney introduces a line of boots, shoes and heels with biodegradable soles. The sole is made from bioplastic, APINAT, that complies with biodegradability standards and is made from renewable raw materials. McCartney’s range as a designer, wife, mother and vegan, is integral to the appeal of her designs.  As technology prospers so does McCartney’s creations.  It will feel great to slip into these biodegradable beauties for Fall.
