To the pessimist, the end is always near. Your favorite prophet of doom can sock it all away in superior—and stealthy—style, while everything goes you-know-where in that handbasket.

THE PESSIMIST PLANS FOR ANY EVENTUALITY... THE OPTIMIST TAKES THE LONG VIEW:

Those words appeared in our 1970 Christmas Book. That year we offered a fully stocked ark (complete with animals, a French chef, and a Park Avenue physician) for the former. For the latter, a humble oak sapling and visions of future grandchildren building a tree house or simply enjoying its shade. The ark would have set you back $588,000 and change. The sapling? Ten bucks. We sold the dickens out of the tree— not a single taker for the ark. Now, in honor of The Christmas Book's 90th anniversary, we offer an update.

The OPTIMIST's Gift

Founded in 2007 by Brittany Merrill Underwood, Akola ("she works" in a Ugandan dialect) is a nonprofit organization that empowers marginalized women to become agents of transformation in their families and communities around the globe. Akola operates with an optimistic mindset, creating social impact through every layer of the supply chain, from raw materials to assembly to distribution. To date, Akola has empowered over 500 women, who in turn have transformed the lives of 4,000 children. This bracelet, available only through Neiman Marcus, features hand-rolled paper beads in confident black or cheery white, a recycled-glass bead, and two accent discs plated in 18-karat gold. For the sunny-minded optimist, it's the most hopeful gift of all: an investment in the future.

The PESSIMIST's Gift

The sophisticated cynic will one-up the old custom of hiding valuables (cash, jewels, stocks, love letters...) under the mattress by hiding them in the mattress. Our chic sleeper holds a cleverly camouflaged lockbox—safe from fire and virtually impenetrable. The lockbox is opened only by one of a million-plus possible combinations, and is removable, too, should things get really grim and your defeatist needs to flee. The king-size mattress and matching foundation are ours alone, engineered and crafted by father-son artisans Dale and Brian Gingerich of Gingerich Built/Monterey Mattress in Carmel, California. With premium padding and superior springs, it's built from certified-sustainable Canadian lumber, organic cotton, organic wool, and organic natural latex foam rubber—so comfy that your charming killjoy may sleep peacefully right through the apocalypse.
