Originally produced in imitation of the lustrous Italian tin-glazed earthenware (known as maiolica) of the Renaissance, majolica was a refreshing change from the blue-and-white transferware that was de rigeur during the early Victorian era. Modern majolica is produced through a labor-intensive process in which low-fired earthenware with natural designs in relief is given an opaque glaze and colorful hand-painted accents.
