HOW TO DRESS FOR A WEDDING: DRESS CODE “I DO’S”

RSVPing to a wedding invitation is usually followed by a single important question: What to wear? With so many possibilities, you’re sure to find “the one”—be it a long-flowing sundress, a cocktail mini, or a daring jumpsuit. The perfect wedding look depends on a few key factors, such as dress code, season, and location. Thankfully, today's wedding attire is more open to interpretation and creativity than ever before.

WEDDING DRESS CODES

Here are six common wedding dress codes and options to wear for each:

White-tie

White-tie affairs are about as formal as weddings get. Traditionally, white-tie occasions require men to wear black tailcoats, formal white shirts, white vests, and derby or oxford shoes with finishing touches such as a white bowtie. Women don floor-length gowns, fine jewelry, evening heels, and clutches. Consider the evening’s agenda and season when selecting a dress, as voluminous materials can be challenging to sit and eat in, and thick, rich fabrics can be stifling during summer.

Black-tie

Still very formal, black-tie attire is elevated and elegant. For women, this may mean a long evening gown, sophisticated pantsuit, and heels, while men typically wear a tuxedo, white dress shirt, black vest, black bowtie, and patent leather shoes.

Formal or black-tie optional

Slightly more relaxed than a black-tie event, men can still wear a tux if desired or opt for a well-tailored suit and tie. Women can dazzle in floor-length dresses and heels.

Cocktail

Cocktail attire allows for more creativity and is the most common dress code for modern weddings. It calls for attire that's just formal enough to deliver a stunning, well-polished look. Women can wear knee-length midi dresses, and men can dress in sophisticated suits and ties.

Semi-formal/dressy-casual

This playful dress code allows for a wide range of styles to shine. Women can wear midi-length cocktail dresses, jumpsuits, or semi-formal skirts and tops with heels or formal footwear. Men can wear blazers, dress shirts, and dignified chinos with dress shoes or loafers and an optional tie.

Casual

Casual weddings are often held outdoors, and the dress code allows guests to remain comfortable yet distinguished. Women can sport playful sundresses, while men can wear short sleeve button-ups, khakis, and loafers.

WHAT TO WEAR TO A WEDDING

The sky’s the limit when it comes to finding the right look to witness nuptials. Here are some helpful tips to plan for the big day.

Take your cues from the wedding theme

Beachside “I do’s” call for a sundress and shoes that easily slip on and off when walking in the sand. A church wedding begs for a matching tweed suit, pearls, and maybe even a chic little pill hat. And a Vegas vow exchange means pulling out all the stops: sequins, statement jewelry, and metallic heels. When looking for what-to-wear inspiration, consider the wedding’s venue.

Dress for the season

Summer weddings call for lightweight, natural, and breathable fabrics. Select naturally wicking materials, such as cotton, linen, bamboo, and nylon. Luxurious and insulating winter fabrics include cashmere, fine wool, and silk.

Understanding which colors best fit each season can also help determine your look. Delicate pastels, vivid hues, and floral prints are natural choices for summer, while dark, rich colors and jewel tones reflect the coolness of winter. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t pick a surprising shade antithetical to the season.

Consider the location

Get inspired by the destination—whether you’re headed to the glamorous Mediterranean or to charming Nantucket. Bring ample accessories in case the weather turns inclement, such as a faux-fur capelet for gentle night breezes and a beautiful umbrella for unexpected showers. If you’re traveling overseas, a nice passport case to match your evening clutch adds an element of polish to your overall look. And don’t forget the wedding gift! We can have it wrapped and shipped for your convenience.

Wear simple accessories

From delicate earrings and necklaces to knock-out diamond suites, jewelry can be simple and understated or your look’s biggest statement. Likewise, shoes with barely there straps in earth tones can be a subtle yet exquisite complement to a dress, or they can become the focal point of any look if you opt for bright or strass-embellished pairs. The goal should be your comfort and to remain true to your own sense of style.
