THE HISTORY
OF DENIM
The creation of denim in the 1800s happened by accident when tailors in the city of Nimes, France, tried to replicate a different fabric called serge. The mishap changed the course of fashion forever when workmen recognized the advantage of making denim part of their daily uniforms. Soon, the popularity of denim spread–thanks, in part, to Hollywood costumers outfitting famous cowboys and rebels in rugged jeans. Now, decades later, denim’s evolution can be traced through its myriad changes in design, weight, cut, and wash, making it one of the most versatile materials used for apparel. As anyone knows, it’s not a matter of choosing a particular jean style, but styling the numerous pairs a modern wardrobe requires.
TYPES OF DENIM
Selvedge Denim
Selvedge denim, renowned for its durability and unique edge finish, is crafted on traditional shuttle looms, resulting in a tighter weave and cleaner cut. Style it with a crisp white shirt and loafers for a timeless, effortlessly chic look that seamlessly transitions from day to night.
Stretch Denim
Stretch denim incorporates elastane fibers for added flexibility, offering unmatched comfort while maintaining shape. This allows for effortless silhouettes that flatter every figure, perfectly pairing with everything from fitted Tees to oversized blazers for a versatile wardrobe staple.
MAKING THE CUT
Wide Leg
Fitted in the seat and roomy from the thighs down, this silhouette accentuates the waist, making it perfect for tucking in or knotting tops at the waist or showcasing a great belt.
Straight Leg
As the name suggests, this style of jean is cut straight from the thighs down. Slim and streamlined, its no-fuss, no-muss silhouette makes it a popular denim design.
Boot Cut
With a slight flare from the calf down, this flattering style was designed to fit comfortably over boots—although, it looks just as great with sandals and sneakers.
Skinny
Slim from waist to ankle, this versatile, curve-hugging silhouette fits like leggings thanks to stretch fibers and is easy to dress up or down, depending on what’s on your agenda.
Boyfriend
Slouchy and relaxed, this design imparts ready-for-the-weekend vibes and is popular for a reason: maximum comfort.
Flared
Fitted from waist to knee and then billowing at the calf, today’s flared leg is a tempered nod to the exaggerated bell bottoms of the ’60s.
THE LOWDOWN ON RISES
Choosing the best rise—where the waistband hits your midsection—depends on comfort, body type, and styling. High-waisted jeans accentuate the waist and elongate legs; mid-rise is a popular choice for its all-around flattering look; and low-rise is great for showing off toned abs with a crop top.
Low Rise
Hitting right below the navel, low-rise jeans are back and better than ever, especially the baggy cargo styles recently seen in denim showrooms.
Mid-Rise
A universally flattering fit makes the mid-rise a popular silhouette. It pairs just as well with button-downs and blazers as it does with vintage tees and tennies.
High-Rise
Tucked-in shirts and belts are the perfect accompaniment to high-rise styles, which give the illusion of longer, leaner legs and a cinched waist.
