THE DENIM Fit Guide

Perhaps most of us remember the grass-stained knees and distressing of our favorite childhood jeans worn during play time. Into our teens, they became the keeper of all lost items: keys, crunched up dollar bills, or the occasional hand-written note. And as adults, we have a few pair that our closets will never be rid of. Yet each season we keep looking for another that can evolve with the changing of time and the changes in our lives. This is your guide to finding the perfect jeans for your life, whether you’re hunting for a forever pair or searching for something to fit your new likes, new interests, new adventures, and new style.

THE HISTORY

OF DENIM

The creation of denim in the 1800s happened by accident when tailors in the city of Nimes, France, tried to replicate a different fabric called serge. The mishap changed the course of fashion forever when workmen recognized the advantage of making denim part of their daily uniforms. Soon, the popularity of denim spread–thanks, in part, to Hollywood costumers outfitting famous cowboys and rebels in rugged jeans. Now, decades later, denim’s evolution can be traced through its myriad changes in design, weight, cut, and wash, making it one of the most versatile materials used for apparel. As anyone knows, it’s not a matter of choosing a particular jean style, but styling the numerous pairs a modern wardrobe requires.

TYPES OF DENIM

Selvedge Denim

Selvedge denim, renowned for its durability and unique edge finish, is crafted on traditional shuttle looms, resulting in a tighter weave and cleaner cut. Style it with a crisp white shirt and loafers for a timeless, effortlessly chic look that seamlessly transitions from day to night.

Raw Denim

Also known as dry denim, this unique approach doesn’t undergo the washing or distressing process after being dyed, giving you the ability to create a personalized fade over time through your own regular wear and care.

Stretch Denim

Stretch denim incorporates elastane fibers for added flexibility, offering unmatched comfort while maintaining shape. This allows for effortless silhouettes that flatter every figure, perfectly pairing with everything from fitted Tees to oversized blazers for a versatile wardrobe staple.

THE LOWDOWN ON RISES

Choosing the best rise—where the waistband hits your midsection—depends on comfort, body type, and styling. High-waisted jeans accentuate the waist and elongate legs; mid-rise is a popular choice for its all-around flattering look; and low-rise is great for showing off toned abs with a crop top.

Low Rise

Hitting right below the navel, low-rise jeans are back and better than ever, especially the baggy cargo styles recently seen in denim showrooms.

Mid-Rise

A universally flattering fit makes the mid-rise a popular silhouette. It pairs just as well with button-downs and blazers as it does with vintage tees and tennies.

THE RIGHT FIT

A distinct attribute of jeans is how they conform to the body over time. But, before this shaping can take place, the right-fitting pair must be found. The majority of jeans sizes are reflected in even numbers that correspond to the waistline measurement, i.e. a size 2 equals a 24-26” waist and so on. Of course, the easiest way to find your perfect fit is by measuring a pair you already own and love and using it as a guide. Another important factor to consider: heel height of the shoes you’ll be wearing with your new jeans. The higher the heel, the longer the inseam should be.

SUSTAINABLE &

ETHICAL DENIM

Sustainable denim embraces innovative practices such as using organic cotton, eco-friendly dyes, and water-saving techniques with a focus on reducing environmental impact and ensuring fair worker conditions. Environmentally friendly jeans not only look timeless and luxurious but also stand as a testament to the industry’s shift towards more conscious consumption. By choosing ethical denim, you’re not just investing in high-quality fashion—you’re becoming part of a movement that values people and the planet.
