Q & A WITH MICHAEL ARAM

For over 30 years, Michael Aram has worked alongside traditional metalworkers, using their age-old hand working techniques to transform functional objects into art. A fusion of originality, narrative, and craftsmanship has become the hallmark of this gifted artist. Read on to discover the holiday traditions he and his family hold dear, seasonal decorating tips, and how his children have inspired some of his recent designs.

Q. What is the holiday tradition that you look forward to the most?

A. Definitely making gingerbread cookies with my family. I refer to my family as “my angels,” so I like to use angel-shaped cookie cutters rather than the traditional gingerbread man shape. I love incorporating Christmas past with Christmas present. It’s a joy to blend the Christmas I make with the kids today with the crafts I did as a kid. Thank you Mom for saving the cookie cutters!

Q. What are some of your quick tips for getting your home ready for the holidays?

A. I cut boughs of pine from our yard and bring them into the house to decorate mantels, tables, and banisters. There is nothing like the smell of fresh-cut pine to put you in the holiday mood. I also love to create wreaths and decorate them with some of my favorite ornaments and bittersweet, which I cut from the back yard. I love to make small bouquets for the table, using some of our smaller containers, with dried elements along with fresh flowers for special dinners during the holidays. Needless to say, it is my favorite time of the year.

Q. Is there a special piece of holiday decor you have that is meaningful to you?

A. I am often inspired by my kids when I design Christmas ornaments. I like to take their advice while designing the pieces, so they hold special meaning for us as a family. We did an ornament last year of Santa reading his list of “Naughty or Nice,” where we made sure to add Anabel and Thadeus’ names to the “Nice” list. They also inspired our nutcracker and ballerina ornaments, since seeing “The Nutcracker” every year at Lincoln Center has been a Christmas tradition for us. My son is currently helping me create a skiing Santa ornament.

Q & A WITH JULISKA

As newlyweds and unabashed romantics, Capucine and David Gooding founded Juliska in 2001 with a small collection of mouth-blown glassware. Today, Juliska produces hundreds of options for your table and home, including an array of charming holiday collections. Read our interview with Capucine Gooding and discover inspired ways to express the magic of the season.

Q. What is the holiday tradition that you look forward to the most?

A. Cooking. Eating. Dining. Repeat! We absolutely love cooking and dining as a family. It’s a happy kind of chaos in the kitchen as we crisscross each other, steal each other’s tools, borrow each other’s ingredients, and offer unsolicited opinions on each other’s recipes. When we finally sit down at a beautifully set table, there’s a kind of magic created in the air, from the handsome plates and glasses, to the perfectly imperfect homemade food, to the twinkling eyes of loved ones connecting in candlelight.

Q. What are some of your quick tips for getting your home ready for the holidays?

A. Delight the senses! Put fresh florals in every room! Cue the atmosphere! Scatter your living room and dining room with an abundance of candles on every stable surface so that you’ll hardly ever need to turn on the light switch and all of your loved ones will glow in candlelight. Be prepared! When you find a darling gift you like, buy at least six of them and stash them in your closet so you always have a clever gift at hand when you need it!

Q. What is your favorite holiday memory?

A. Once when my children were little they asked, “Mommy, what do you want for Christmas?’” And I told them that their handmade gifts were the best! My clever daughter looked at me warily and asked, “Then why do you always buy ours?” And so of course I set about making a handmade gift for each of my children that year and have done every year since. By far, my favorite memory and the thing I anticipate the most on Christmas morning is opening each other’s handmade gifts. They are often hilarious craft-fails that become treasured keepsakes in our homes. As an example, I decided I was going to knit a beautiful scarf for each of my children. I have no idea how to knit, so I somehow added stitches so that my scarf was about 10 inches at the top and about 36 inches at the bottom—somewhere between a blanket and a scarf!
