CHAIRMAN EMERITUS, THE ESTÉE LAUDER COMPANIES
Neiman Marcus Award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Fashion
Visionary leader, inspiring philanthropist, and Chairman Emeritus of The Estée Lauder Companies, Leonard A. Lauder is renowned for transforming the business started by his mother, Mrs. Estée Lauder, into a global pioneer of prestige beauty.
Growing up during the Great Depression, he helped his mother launch the company from their kitchen in 1946, before he officially joined the family business in 1958. Ever the innovator, he built the company’s first research and development laboratory, coined the “lipstick index” phrase, and created the now-standard lipstick shape by slicing the rounded lipstick top at an angle with a razor.
During his tenure, he ushered in a new era, focusing on international expansion and building the company’s brands and acquisition strategy. He served as chief executive officer of The Estée Lauder Companies from 1982–99 and took on the role of chairman from 1995–June 2009. In July 2009, Lauder became chairman emeritus and continues to be deeply involved in the business and day-to-day operations.
Known internally as the organization’s “chief teaching officer,” Lauder believes that a business’s wealth is its people and focuses on fostering growth within the company’s diverse talent pool. A tireless advocate for employees and passionate about their development and creativity, he has imbued the company culture with his own personal values of kindness and respect for others.
"Honoring Leonard Lauder tonight is especially meaningful. He transformed his family business into a global icon and carries forward a legacy rooted in deep customer connection—a philosophy driving The Estée Lauder Companies' remarkable global growth. His vision has elevated luxury standards, reshaping industry possibilities and inspiring both innovation and elegance. We're excited to partner with his brands to create immersive activations that offer our customers unique experiences reflecting the beauty and luxury he champions. This partnership is a testament to our shared commitment to reimagining luxury for the future and celebrating his impact within our community of luxury leaders."
–Geoffroy van Raemdonck, Chief Executive Officer, Neiman Marcus Group
Throughout his illustrious and impactful career, Lauder reshaped the industry, creating the modern beauty business as the steward of one of the most iconic brands in history. Over six decades of leadership, he helped transform the company from a brand with eight products in one country to a beloved empire with a portfolio that includes more than 20 brands sold in approximately 150 countries and territories. As a direct result of his influence, the company today is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of prestigious skin care, makeup, fragrance, and hair care.
Lauder joins the esteemed ranks of more than 150 other global luminaries who have received this prestigious honor, including his mother, who was recognized in 1962 for her immense contributions to the industry. A celebration of this long-standing relationship, this award marks the next chapter in the enduring collaboration between Neiman Marcus and The Estée Lauder Companies.
“When my mother, Mrs. Estée Lauder, was recognized with this award in 1962, it meant a great deal to her, and it means a great deal to me today.”
—Leonard A. Lauder, Chairman Emeritus, The Estée Lauder Companies
As part of the Awards program, Lauder’s year-long recognition will include exclusive and immersive in-store and online experiences.
“It is an honor to recognize [Leonard’s] contributions to our industry. We look forward to bringing his vision to life through a unique expression of the company’s portfolio of brands.”
—Lana Todorovich, Chief Merchandising Officer, Neiman Marcus
